Gangotri (Hindi:गंगोत्री) is a town in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is a Hindu pilgrim town on the banks of the river Bhagirathi. It is on the Greater Himalayan Range, at a height of 3,415 m.
Gangotri, the origin of the River Gangesand seat of the goddess Ganga, is one of the four sites in the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. The river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga(Ganges) from Devprayag onwards where it meets the Alaknanda.
The origin of the holy river is at Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri Glacier, and is a 19 km trek from Gangotri. Gangotri can be reached in one day's travel from Rishikesh,Haridwar or Dehradun, or in two days from Yamunotri.It is just 105 Km from Uttarkashi.
Gangotri is accessible directly by car and bus.There are some small hotels in gangotri but mostly there are dharamshalas run by various charitable trusts . Accommodation and food is free in all the dharamshalas and people can donate to them on their own free will.
It is advised that you reach gangotri as early in the morning as you can because if you reach in late afternoon or evening you might get trouble in finding accommodation as the number of pilgrims increases drastically by evening.
